All Heart Redwood
COOLgrapes uses only the finest clear, All-Heart Redwood available. Selected
by hand in the heart of redwood country in northern California; our redwood
is truly of premium grade. Colored (or Sapwood) Redwood is readily available
at your local lumber company. Cut from the outside of the tree, colored
redwood has mottled color ranging from very light pine coloring to the dark
heart redwood colors. It remains an average wood choice.
Less costly cedar has similar
properties to redwood but some cedars have strong penetrating aromas.
Most experts agree that odors in the surrounding environment will taint
bottled wine over time; resulting in unwanted aromas infecting the wine.
COOLgrapes' heartwood is cut
from the center of the tree and is hand selected as our racking material.
It is strong, stable, and free of knots and disease. All-Heart Redwood
has a natural rich reddish color that ages gracefully. All-Heart Redwood
the premier American softwood.
Honduran Mahogany
The term "Honduran Mahogany" at one point did reference the
wood as being harvested from Honduras. However, due to over-harvesting
and improper growth management, local government halted most of the export
of this wood. Honduran Mahogany is simply a more exotic wood species term
to reference Genuine Mahogany.
Today, primarily all Honduran/Genuine
Mahogany that is imported into the U.S. originates from either Chili or
Peru. There is a cheaper version of Mahogany available and is sourced
from Africa. African Mahogany is commonly used in low to average grade
cabinetry and furniture and never used in our applications. COOLgrapes
uses Honduran/Genuine Mahogany.
